Challenge
As the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for Xstrata Mining’s project in the remote Andes Mountains of Peru, Bechtel needed durable facilities to support day-to-day operations in a harsh, high-altitude environment. The project required warehouse storage, fabrication space, vehicle and equipment maintenance facilities, offices, and dining areas that could be deployed quickly despite the site’s challenging terrain and limited infrastructure. With an aggressive construction schedule, Bechtel needed a versatile building solution that could be installed rapidly and adapt to a variety of foundation conditions.
Solution
To support the project, Big Top designed and manufactured multiple custom-engineered clear-span fabric structures tailored to Bechtel’s operational needs. The structures were installed on a variety of foundations, including concrete slabs, compacted soil, and, most notably, shipping containers that also transported the buildings to the job site. This innovative approach reduced the amount of structural steel required while creating additional enclosed storage space beneath the buildings. Engineered for rapid installation and long-term durability, Big Top’s fabric structures enabled Bechtel to quickly establish critical project infrastructure, helping keep construction on schedule while supporting efficient mining operations in one of the world’s most demanding environments.
