SpaceX needed more than just additional covered space, which meant they needed something beyond a traditional metal building. They needed a facility designed around the work they were doing. When working on large modules, the size, configuration, and accessibility of the structure become critical factors in the decision-making process. The challenge SpaceX encountered was finding a structure that could accommodate the scale, accessibility requirements, and unique nature of their operation. A conventional fixed structure would have created limitations in how the modules could be accessed and worked on throughout the process. Solution
Instead of adapting their operation to fit the building, Big Top was able to adapt the building to fit around SpaceX’s operation. Big Top and SpaceX collaborated closely to develop a solution tailored to the unique needs of the project. After identifying the key requirements, the solution became clear: SpaceX needed two Chop Structures. The identical structures measure 126 feet wide, 130 feet long, and 69 feet tall and are built on crane rails, allowing them to move to cover and uncover SpaceX’s large-scale modules. This unique design provides protection from the elements while maintaining the accessibility and flexibility SpaceX needs to work efficiently. By moving around the building rather than requiring the modules to be relocated, the structures minimize disruption to existing workflows, save valuable time, and provide a durable solution capable of meeting the demands of SpaceX’s unique working environment.
