The Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) urgently needed a cost-effective, long-term recycling solution after the unexpected closure of its original processing facility left the organization without a local recycling center. As a temporary measure, ECUA transported recyclable materials to a facility in Loxley, Alabama, but this arrangement quickly became unsustainable when the facility imposed an additional $12.50-per-ton processing fee. Faced with rising costs and limited control over its recycling operations, ECUA decided to develop its own dedicated recycling facility to ensure the program’s long-term success.
Solution
ECUA partnered with Big Top to develop a cost-effective, long-term facility solution for its recycling operations. After collaborating with the ECUA team to understand the project’s needs, Big Top designed, engineered, and manufactured a custom fabric structure tailored to the facility’s complex equipment layout. The 53,460-square-foot building was manufactured and shipped within 60 days, helping ECUA move forward with its plans to establish an independent recycling facility. Once operational, the facility provided the space needed for recycling equipment, allowing ECUA to process recyclable materials in-house instead of relying on an outside facility. By eliminating third-party processing costs and transportation expenses, ECUA now saves $45.06 per ton while maintaining a sustainable recycling program.
