As one of the nation’s largest lumber producers, Idaho Forest Group depends on maintaining the quality of its lumber throughout every stage of production and storage. Lumber stored outdoors along the loading and staging areas was continually exposed to rain and prolonged UV exposure, increasing the risk of moisture-related issues, weathering, and product degradation. The company needed a durable, full-length structure that could provide continuous overhead protection for the entire lumber storage building while maintaining open side access for efficient material handling, loading, and day-to-day operations.
Solution
To provide continuous protection without disrupting daily operations, Idaho Forest Group partnered with Big Top to design and manufacture a custom clear-span fabric building engineered specifically for the site. This is one of the most complex and innovative projects Big Top has completed featuring a unique common-leg design that supports two expansive roof spans from a shared center column, maximizing covered space while minimizing structural obstructions. The open-sided design allows forklifts and equipment to move freely beneath the structure, while the durable fabric roof protects stored lumber from rain and harmful UV exposure. Measuring 298.5 feet wide, 731 feet long, and 45 feet tall, the custom-engineered structure spans more than 218,000 square feet, providing protected storage and long-term weather protection for lumber, equipment, and materials while supporting the demanding needs of the lumber industry.
